Nadastrom at The Do-Over
I remember the first time I heard something like moombahton. It was one of this summer’s first Do-Overs at El Cid. DJ Ayres was spinning dancehall on 45s. He snuck in a 7 inch Serato record, which I had never seen, and started playing dutch style house sounds. I was blown away. Standing behind Ayres was a distinct man with black rimmed glasses, black asymmetrical hair, and a seemingly bottomless lowball glass who I found out later was Dave Nada, the originator of moombahton. I went back home and did my research on Aryes and Nada and found more music and became hooked (even though I felt late on the ‘wagon).
Then I started going to every moombahton event in LA I could find. I noticed that a lot of the DJs were using Traktor and Native Instrument midi controllers like my friends. I wanted my friends to hear and dance to this music, so I had to learn how to DJ and bring it to them.
Nadastrom at The Do-Over was one of the highlights of my summer. Thanks Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom. Thanks Do-Over organizers/hosts. Only one more Do-Over to go and the season is over over.

I’ve got to say that Coleman has one of the most positive and charismatic energies I’ve ever seen in a DJ. He exemplifies that attitude in his tweets, “Thanks to my Baby @marybeezee and dear friend @mikepark8 for the inspiration today! Thank you @Do_over for letting me express myself.” What a cool guy, and he’s a photographer!

July 4 Over & Over at The Standard in Downtown LA
The line was fierce. People were friendly. The weather was perfect. Somehow I didn’t get sunburn.
And of course, the music was on point. I saw Scott K and Jeremy Ellis. Now stop, google “Jeremy Ellis,” and come back. Pretty sweet right? He is the master of live MPC/MPD. I spoke with him briefly after his set and he credited his ability to a family history of classical pianists. He’s also from Detroit, Michigan (my home state), which is sweet. Unfortunately I dipped during Mr. Choc‘s set to grab another battery from my apartment. I came back in time for Al Jackson and the fireworks.
At one point during the day I was standing next to Pops and out of no where he just smiled and said, “So many dancing partners.” Not, “lotsa hot chicks here,” or, “look at the _____ on that _____,” but, “so many dancing partners.” Respectful swag.

And did you see the prosthetic arm with a wristband on it? It belongs to the b-boy in the photo! I tried to remember his name. I know it has something to do with the arm. I think it’s Socket? Does anybody know? The man could dance and was warm and humble. He reminds me of Bill Shannon or B-Boy Junior, but they have all their body parts. It just goes to show you how important dance is to the human experience.

The Do-Over | Questlove, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DJ Eleven
Another great Do-Over. I made it halfway through Questlove’s set and had to leave halfway through DJ Eleven’s set. I was there for all of DJ Jazz Jeff’s set and it was outstanding. And Skillz was an amazing host. I’m sad I missed Recloose. That would have been really cool. I fucked up.

First Do-Over at Cabana Club (in Monochrome)
Another great Do-Over. Even though it rained for a minute later in the evening the dance floor remained packed. Can’t wait for next Sunday.

First Do-Over at Cabana Club (in Color)
After a brief stop in Silver Lake, The Do-Over LA has moved back to Hollywood taking up residence as Cabana Club. The venue is larger and we can be loud as fuck.

If you’re checking out that first photo and you’re wondering what an old man is doing partying with kids on a Sunday, then you are missing out on one of the seminal characters in Los Angeles. I have only ever heard him referred to as Pops. He chews on something that keeps his teeth fresh, he smokes out of an apple, and he dances mad respectfully with all the women (and they all love it). If you see him, you know you’re at the right party. Introduce yourself, have a conversation with him (he’s all there), and let him dance with your girl(s).
